This is a demo project. The business is made up, to show how I work.

The brief.

Apex is a small plumbing and heating firm doing emergency callouts and boiler installs. Most of their work starts with a worried phone call, usually in the evening, usually from someone standing next to a cold radiator.

The sites they were up against hid the phone number under a slideshow and a page of badges. Apex needed the opposite: a site that gets a stressed person to the phone in one tap.

What I did.

  1. The phone number never leaves the screen

On a phone, a call button stays fixed at the bottom of every page. Nobody in a cold house should have to scroll to find it.

  2. The price comes before the call

The callout fee sits right under the headline. Knowing what it costs before ringing takes the worry out of picking up the phone.

  3. Calm, not shouty

Deep charcoal with one warm amber and strong, plain headings. It needed to feel steady and capable, not like an emergency advert.

On a phone.

Most of Apex’s calls come from a phone, so the mobile version was designed first. The call button, the price and the area they cover all fit on the first screen.
